FAQs

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a type of psychotherapy that helps people heal from the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences. While EMDR is best known for treating trauma and PTSD, it can also be effective for anxiety, panic attacks, eating disorders, addictions, and other mental health issues.

EMDR works by having the patient recall distressing images while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, including side-to-side eye movements. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their lingering effects and allowing clients to develop more adaptive coping mechanisms.

Numerous research studies have shown EMDR to be effective for treating trauma and PTSD. It’s recognized by organizations like the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for these conditions. The length of EMDR therapy can vary depending on the individual client’s history and needs. Generally, the active phase of EMDR treatment may range from as few as five sessions to as many as twenty, but this can differ from person to person.
